The decision comes amid record annual losses of approximately ₹27,000 crore in FY26, as Tata Group leadership tightens operational oversight. The laundry service elimination is part of an urgent cost-cutting drive aimed at stemming the airline's substantial financial bleeding.

The airline has been under considerable pressure to reduce non-essential expenditures as it navigates a challenging operating environment marked by soaring aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and geopolitical airspace restrictions affecting profitability.

Crew Accommodations Adjusted

Starting July 1, 2026, Air India will discontinue complimentary laundry services for its flight crew during international layovers. The airline has communicated that hotel rooms will be equipped with irons and ironing boards to help crew maintain uniform standards, though the removal of the professional laundry perk marks a shift in operational policy.

The provision of in-room ironing facilities is intended to allow crew members to maintain their uniforms independently, though this falls short of the professional laundering services previously provided.

Limited to International Operations

This measure is limited to international operations, with domestic layover policies remaining unchanged. Crew members operating on domestic routes will continue to have access to existing facilities, limiting the impact to those working on the airline's international network.

Broader Context of Financial Strain

Air India's financial difficulties are not isolated to this single operational change. The airline has also rationalized its services on select international routes between June and August 2026 in response to airspace restrictions over certain regions and record high jet fuel prices for international operations, which significantly impact the commercial viability of certain planned services.
